You don’t want an off-the-shelf engagement ring, but one that tells your story? Then sooner or later you’ll come across two especially expressive designs: the Toi et Moi ring with its two stones and the Trilogy ring with three. Both deliberately put symbolism at the centre – and both look absolutely beautiful.
In this guide we’ll show you:
- the meaning behind Toi et Moi and Trilogy
- how the two styles differ in design
- which ring suits you – and your story
- what to look for in stones, cuts and materials
We’ve already had the pleasure of creating many design variations of these special engagement rings – each one a unique piece, made to suit its wearer perfectly. Whether with lab grown diamonds in oval, round or pear cut, or with coloured gemstones: let yourself be inspired and fall in love with these one-of-a-kind designs!
Toi et Moi and Trilogy – what makes them special
Most engagement rings put a single stone at the centre, like the classic solitaire ring. Toi et Moi and Trilogy take a different path: they tell their story through several stones.
With the Toi et Moi, two stones sit closely side by side – an image of two people coming together. With the Trilogy, there are three – traditionally a symbol of past, present and future. Both belong to the designs where the meaning matters just as much as the sparkle.
The Toi et Moi ring: two stones, your story
Meaning: ‘you and me’
‘Toi et Moi’ is French and simply means ‘you and me’. That’s exactly what defines this ring: two stones sit side by side on the band and symbolise two people, two personalities, two paths in life coming together. It’s a romantic, very personal design – no wonder the Toi et Moi has been one of the most beautiful proposal classics with history for years.
Design: two stones, often in different cuts
What’s exciting about the Toi et Moi is its play with contrasts. The two stones don’t have to be identical – quite the opposite: you often deliberately combine two different cuts, for example a pear with an oval. The result is a design that feels modern and timeless at once.

Our bestseller Ring Elly is a beautiful example: a delicate Toi et Moi with two lab grown diamonds in pear and oval cut. If you prefer something more opulent, Ring Ivy is the elegant, sparkling extension of this design.
And if you’d like to give your ‘you and me’ a truly personal touch, Ring Ophelia is worth a look: a birthstone Toi et Moi where you can set a birthstone – for a child or a special person, for example. This turns the ring from an engagement ring into a true keepsake.
By the way, our Ring Ophelia is especially popular as a gift for a new mum to celebrate a birth! We created the very first one for our customer Daniel for the birth of his daughter – with the birthstone aquamarine for his wife and amethyst for his daughter.
To this day we haven’t made two identical designs – every ring is a unique piece for which we combine your individual birthstones. 100% to your wishes. The result is a gift that carries a very special bond within it and makes it visible every day!
The Trilogy ring: three stones for past, present and future
Meaning: your shared story in three stones
The Trilogy ring (sometimes also called a three-stone ring) carries three stones side by side. The most beautiful interpretation: the three stones stand for past, present and future – for everything that was, is and is yet to come. For many couples, that’s a wonderfully fitting symbolism for a proposal.
Design: three stones, clear presence
With the Trilogy, a slightly larger stone often sits in the centre, flanked by two smaller ones. The result is a ring with noticeably more presence on the finger than a single solitaire – without looking overdone.

Our Ring Tate shows this design in its most elegant form. Ring Suri is a little more delicate, with three brilliant lab grown diamonds. And here too there’s a personal version: the customisable Ring Suri, which many wear as a family ring – the three stones then stand for three loved ones.
Toi et Moi or Trilogy – which one suits you?
Both styles are special, but they tell slightly different stories:
- Toi et Moi is the romantic choice for ‘the two of us’ – ideal if your focus is on your bond as a couple. It looks modern, often asymmetrical and very individual.
- Trilogy is the choice for anyone who wants to tell the story of their shared journey over time – or to open the symbolism up to the family. It looks more classic and more present.

In our consultations we take plenty of time to find out together with you which design feels right. In our experience it helps to compare several designs – because the first wish is often not the piece you end up choosing!
Stones, cuts and materials
Whether two or three stones: what matters is how they work together. Cut, size and colour should be well coordinated to create a harmonious overall look. Diamonds are most commonly used for Toi et Moi and Trilogy rings – at our atelier, lab grown diamonds of the highest brilliance. We explain the quality characteristics behind them in our guide to the 4 C’s.
With the Toi et Moi the cut is especially important, because two stones are visible right next to each other: a combination of two shapes – such as pear and oval – looks modern, while two identical cuts look more symmetrical and calm. With the Trilogy, the ratio of the centre stone to the two side stones defines the ring’s character.
If you like, you can also set a single coloured gemstone as an accent, for example a birthstone – like in Ring Ophelia. You’ll find plenty of options for this in our customisable rings.
As always, you can choose your metal: white gold, yellow gold or rose gold in 14k or 18k – depending on whether you like it cool and modern, classic and warm, or soft and romantic.
Fit and the right size
Especially with rings that have several stones, it’s worth paying attention to the right size so the ring sits securely and comfortably. If you’re unsure, you can simply measure your ring size – or use our free Ring Sizer.
What do Toi et Moi and Trilogy rings cost?
The price depends above all on the stones: the number, size and quality of the diamonds make up the largest share. Since a Trilogy carries three stones and a Toi et Moi two, they tend to sit slightly above a simple solitaire.
