FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
How do lab-grown diamonds differ from natural diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds differ only in their origin: while natural diamonds grow underground, lab-grown diamonds are created by humans under controlled conditions. In your jewelry, both stones—provided they are of the same quality—will sparkle identically and bring you joy for a lifetime!
How are lab-grown diamonds created?
Lab-grown diamonds are man-made, genuine diamonds. There are two methods for producing lab-grown diamonds: the CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) process and the HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) process.
The HPHT process is a traditional method for growing diamonds, which imitates the natural growth processes underground (very high heat and pressure at several kilometers depth).
The newer CVD process uses carbon-containing gas, which is directed into a vacuum chamber where it settles on a diamond seed and crystallizes into a diamond.
Depending on size and quality, the growth process (crystallization) takes between a few days for very small stones and several weeks.
Where do DEAR DARLING BERLIN's lab-grown diamonds come from?
We source our lab-grown diamonds from our trusted partner DIAVON in Germany, with whom we maintain close, personal contact.
As a partner of Diamond Foundry Inc., they supply us with conflict-free and demonstrably sustainable diamonds. Diamond Foundry proudly holds the Carbon Neutral Certificate.
The lab-grown diamonds are produced in the USA using a high-tech process powered by renewable energy. The pure hydropower of the Columbia River is used to create these unique diamonds. Our diamonds are then cut and polished by experienced cutters in Surat, India, as is the case with approximately 90% of all diamonds worldwide.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes, lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds! They are optically, chemically, and physically identical to natural diamonds and consist of 100% carbon. The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) confirmed this back in 2018. Even experts cannot distinguish them from one another with the naked eye.
Lab-grown diamonds are also referred to as "synthesis" – but this has nothing to do with an "artificial" product. Synthesis simply describes the targeted production of diamonds through technological processes that result in a lab-grown diamond that is chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds.
Are lab-grown diamonds sustainable?
Just because a diamond is grown in a lab doesn't automatically make it sustainable. The production of lab-grown diamonds requires energy – the type of energy used is crucial in determining whether a lab-grown diamond can be considered sustainable or not.
Lab-grown diamonds are only sustainable if they are produced responsibly and using renewable energy. Many conventional lab-grown diamonds on the market, however, are grown using cheap, environmentally damaging coal-fired electricity.
We source our lab-grown diamonds through our German partner DIAVON, which collaborates with the renowned Diamond Foundry in the USA. These lab-grown diamonds are produced in a CO2-neutral manner, using hydropower from the local Columbia River. Cultivated. The Diamond Foundry also holds the Carbon Neutral Certificate.
